History of the William Penn Dining Railcar:
Budd Corporation built the William Penn railcar #7137 for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1951. It was originally designed as a parlor car with 29 luxurious first class seats and a drawing room on one end for private meetings.
The car ran as part of the “Congressional” providing daily service between Washington, DC and New York City. The Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central consolidated in 1968, becoming the Penn Central, and the car was renamed the Anthony Wayne.
In the early 1970s, Amtrak acquired the car and converted it to a cafeteria-style diner, naming it the Saratoga Inn #3127. Amtrak removed #3127 from service in 2002. In late 2003, a group of dedicated railcar owners united to restore the car. After extensive renovations, the car was re-christened with its original name, the William Penn. Now you can experience the elegance and privilege of this luxury dining car.
